Christ United Methodist Church

Westfield, Indiana

Shortly after winning a "by invitation only" design competition and beginning construction on a new Family Life Center for Christ United Methodist Church, the church amended Aspen Group's construction contract to begin the design process for a new sanctuary to replace the older, out of character sanctuary built during the 1970’s.

Following the lead of several church members, the building committee brought forth a new, traditional building concept that reflects the long, distinguished history of the church, its DNA, and its location in the historic district of downtown Westfield, IN. Using Aspen Group’s collaborative D/B team approach, the church’s concept was refined and integrated into the existing facility through prayer and team work with local officials, the church’s neighbors, various committees, and a select team of design professionals.

Capable of seating 520 worshippers on the first floor and another 113 in an upper balcony, the proposed sanctuary will make additional space available for this fast growing community. In addition to its impressive entry colonnade and steeple, which is anticipated to be one of the tallest structures in Hamilton County, the new sanctuary and entry hall will feature historic stained glass windows that have been preserved and handed down from generation to generation since the days when the church was a stop on the underground railroad.

Equally impressive will be a series of new stained glass windows nearly 14-feet tall that surround the chancel area and proclaim the Gospel message.

Related work will include relocation of the existing library and creation of a new, larger choir assembly room and additional nursery space.

Design challenges included planning around an existing basement and limited space to accommodate additional parking and storm water detention without significantly impacting a grove of trees treasured by the church and community alike. The approval process, which required three local variances, was not only championed by the design team, but by a nearby neighbor as well.

Once built, this 16,249 square foot addition will continue to enhance an already diverse ministry and partnership with the local community.
