Good Shepherd Church
Chicago area
Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Naperville, Illinois, partnered with Aspen Group as they considered facility solutions that would meet the needs of their growing church and align with their vision to “reach and transform spiritually distracted families” in the local community. Good Shepherd had successfully undergone several previous building projects, but this time felt they needed an experienced ministry partner to guide them through the alignment of culture, leadership, ministry, and facilities.
Through collaboration with Aspen Group, it was decided that instead of building a huge sanctuary that would hold everyone, they would pursue other options that would allow them to connect with a wider range of the local community. Before the building project began, they started offering two options for services: traditional services in the sanctuary to appeal to the baby boomer generation, and an edgier, alternative service geared toward the 20-something crowd in the gym/activity center. This change proved successful and they continued to grow, but how could their facilities expand and support this? The solution was a two-phase building expansion and renovation project.
Phase One focused on renovating the existing sanctuary. The aesthetics and functionality were updated with new carpet, paint and refinished pews. The stage was renovated and expanded, choir lofts were relocated for better acoustics, seating was expanded, and tech lighting was updated.
Phase two was the addition of a second worship center – a versatile, alternative setting for contemporary service. This space has a stage and flexible seating to allow for endless configurations needed for a variety of gatherings.
Another key element of this project was the addition of an open lobby that connects the two worship spaces. As the first impression, the lobby is designed to welcome members and visitors and introduce them to the culture of Good Shepherd. Soft seating and tables allow for casual conversation, and a full-service café provides a place for gathering and connection. The lobby blends traditional and contemporary with high ceilings, wooden arches and decking similar to the sanctuary. The focal point of the space is a central fireplace and cross element in front of large windows.
Since the project was completed in the fall of 2010, the church has continued to experience growth and now holds six weekend services. “I’m truly blessed to say that everyone loves the renovation and addition,” Pastor Wenhold said, “We have multiple venues here but everyone has the same vision.”
