CKN Celebrates 12 Years of Church Research

Culture | Events | Millennials | Church Construction | Managing Facilities

January 2016 marks the 12th anniversary for the Cornerstone Knowledge Network (CKN). Aspen Group, an integrated design, build and furnish company devoted to creating space for ministry impact, co-founded CKN with Cogun, a former church design-build firm.

“Our shared vision to create meaningful knowledge to help the church gave birth to the CKN,” says Ed Bahler, CEO of Aspen Group. “The research we do through CKN provides insight into how culture, leadership, ministry, and facility design affect and shape the church.”

Since its inception in 2004, CKN has commissioned six different research projects (four of them are available here) and shared the results from these studies in articles, resources, and at a variety of learning events, such as Aspen’s annual Alignment Conference and Aspen Learning Summits.

In 2014, CKN joined forces with Barna Group and created Making Space for Millennials, a comprehensive research project that looks at the way today’s 18- to 34-year-olds view faith and engage in the church. (Download a free sample chapter here.) Aspen Group worked with OX Creative to produce this video, which highlights many of the key findings from this critical research project.

CKN has commissioned other major research organizations, including TAG, The Rainer Group, and Lifeway Research, to study other aspects of the church, such as the correlation between church design and ministry success, perspectives on sacred space by the unchurched, and the effects of ministry expansion.

“We believe that we can do more for the church by learning and sharing knowledge about culture, leadership, ministry, and facilities, rather than hiding and hoarding this information for our own business gain,” says Bahler.
